Product Description
365 reasons to love America! The fife and drum of history mark the time of each passing day. And within their cadence, personalities, conflicts, discoveries, ideas, and nations peal and fade. American history is no different. From the starving time of Jamestown during the Winter of 1609, through the bloody argument of the Civil War, and to today, the United States is a tale best told one day at a time. Best-selling author and educator Dr. William J. Bennett is a master of the story that is the United States. And in The American Patriot's Almanac, Bennett distills the American drama into three hundred sixty-five entries-one for each day of the year. Fascinating in its detail and singular in its grasp of the big themes, Bennett's Almanac will make anyone a fan of history, assembling even some of the most obscure details. Even better, it will make of everyone a patriot.

4 out of 5 stars Review of The American Patriot's Almanac   August 18, 2010
dg8000
Do you like history? In William J. Bennett and John T.E. Cribb's book The American Patriot's Almanac, history fills the entire year. On each page you will find a new "on this day in history." Every day has a story relevant to the date, along with other notable facts. For example, April 13th is the day Thomas Jefferson was born. After a story about Jefferson, quoting Franklin D. Roosevelt's dedication of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington., D.C., the authors list four other facts that make the 13th of April unique. Three hundred sixty-five days and over two hundred years of history are packed into the pages of this book. Then, at the end of each month, the authors provide bonus material, like facts about various flags, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution.

Though not light reading, as a novel could be, the Almanac does not cram too much information onto each page. Taken one entry at a time, this book is an excellent resource in the home, school, or any place where you want to learn more about the history of America. The Almanac is an historical resource, not only for those who love history, but for anyone who wants to learn more about America. I highly recommend it as a great source of inspiration and information.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting -Not captivating   August 10, 2010

As titled, it is an almanac, not a story. Facts are chronologically gathered to show each day in U.S. history. Fine for occasional gems, but my interest flagged very quickly

5 out of 5 stars Almanac   July 8, 2010

Got this as a Christmas gift for my grand nephew. Can't WAIT to give it to him so he can start 2011 off with this book. His dad is also excited because he wants to teach his sons real American history, not the politically correct, secular humanist stuff taught in government schools. Bill Bennett--you rock!

5 out of 5 stars Great book, share with your family.   May 10, 2010

This is an excellent book by an excellent author who cares deeply about all people in the US knowing their history. I bought this for my husband, but the whole family has found it interesting. It is a high quality book, with thick paper pages. I plan to buy many more of Bill Bennett's books to help our whole family get a strong grasp of our American Heritage. Great gift idea for the American History nut in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting!   March 4, 2010

This book is so cool! It has all kinds of interesting facts and dates that you wouldn't have known before. It's interesting that the Republic of Texas declared its independence from Mexico on Sam Houston's birthday, seeing he was the first president of the aforesaid. It only takes a few minutes to read each enlightening page. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in our nation's past.
