Product Description

The heartwarming and unforgettable story of a family in the making and the wondrously neurotic dog who taught them what really matters in life.

John and Jenny were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy—and their life would never be the same. Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound steamroller of a Labrador retriever who crashed through screen doors, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, devoured couches and fine jewelry, and was expelled from obedience school. Yet Marley's heart was pure, and he remained a steadfast model of love and devotion for a growing family through pregnancy, birth, heartbreak, and joy, right to the inevitable goodbye.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Any Dog Lover   March 3, 2010
Madison J. Taylor (Minneapolis, MN USA)
I picked up this book a few years back after hearing only good things about it. I don't regret that decision. The story of Marley is a heartwarming tale full of laughs and life lessons. It's one of those books that makes you appreciate your dog even more, even with all their quirks.

2 out of 5 stars Great book, poor edition   February 28, 2010
JRL (Boston, MA)
This is a great book, capturing the complicated relationship between man and dog. But this edition is very bad. The paper is cheap newsprint, the print is much too small, and the pictures are almost invisible. Spend the money for the hardback edition, which I also have. This purchase was for a gift and disappointing

5 out of 5 stars All the mistakes you can make raising a puppy   February 18, 2010
Michelle Boytim (Tucson, AZ USA)
I enjoyed the writing about all the mistakes they made raising a puppy, and how they ended up overcoming at least some of these to make Marley into a dog they could live with, at least most of the time. I enjoyed the humor and the ups and downs of a growing family.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Book, Despite What Some May Say   February 18, 2010
Cecilia L. Mctigue
As a freshman in high school, my literature class was assigned to read an outside reading book. I chose Marley and Me because of the recent hype over the movie. I also have a dog of my own about the same size and energy level as Marley, yet another reason I decided to give it a try. Now after reading multiple reviews on Amazon, both positive and negative, I have found that I agree mainly with the positive reviews. I considered Marley and Me to be an extremely enjoyable book, full of not only funny little stories but also times of sorrow. The author made one feel as if they were part of the family and Marley their own dog.
However, many are quick to disagree. Many negative reviews have noted that the author, John Grogan, was nothing but an irresponsible, misinformed, abusive, and selfish pet owner who should never been allowed to take care of any type of pet. These reviews feel sympathy for Marley. In Grogan's defense, some comments were taken out of context by these reviewers. They are right in stating that Grogan was a first time pet owner who should have been more informed. However, compared to some of the other owners who buy pets on a whim only to send them to the, he is a perfectly acceptable owner in my view. Even through the tough times, Grogan was able to accept the responsibility for Marley and not just get rid of him as many other owners do. For example, when Grogan's wife, Jenny, becomes so fed up with Marley and his antics that she orders Grogan to get rid of him, Grogan doesn't send him to the pound; instead, Grogan puts Marley into a rigorous training regimen to teach him to be more obedient, and Jenny eventually accepts him again. To me, this is quite respectable considering how troublesome a dog Marley seemed to be. Furthermore, some reviewers complain that Marley never had a happy home and was abused by Grogan such as when he was left in the garage. Yes, I agree, this was a mistake on Grogan's part. However, we must accept the fact that he is just human. Humans make mistakes, and Grogan is no different. Can we truthfully say that we are all perfect pet owners?
Overall, I found this book was a good read and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good story about the small things about life and how a pet can greatly impact your life.

Marley and Me:
Life and Love
with the World's
Worst Dog

Currently, I am reading the book Marley and Me, which is a lighthearted "tail" of a man and his mischievous dog, Marley. It is a wonderful read that is, so far, extremely enjoyable and full of laughs. Being a dog lover, this book greatly appeals to me, aside from the fact that this book is mostly about the author himself, Mr. John Grogan. Mr. Grogan, from page one, tells us of his desires for a child, but decides to take in Labrador puppy, Marley, for the time being. John and his wife, Jenny, thought that owning a puppy would be good practice in taking care of "something" before taking on the responsibility of a child.
This idea of taking care of "something", however, has been extremely controversial for some reviewers. They have said that Grogan's treatment of Marley, during his life and during his old age, was horrible and inhumane. The readers also said that Marley had to endure so much pain, yet still gave his heart up to his owners anyway.
These events may be true about Marley's life, but in my opinion, it is simply the life of a dog. I am not saying
